God is always good - what that really means (2023)

God is always good. It's easy to see God's goodness when life tastes like a cold glass of lemonade. When our hearts are happy, our eyes are open to His glorious presence, His plan for our lives, and the beauty of His creation all around us. But sometimes life is just so hard. In these times we must hold fast to this simple truth: God is always good.

How good is it when a plane crashes in the Alps and all 150 people on board die - and yet the national football team that was supposed to be on that plane misses their flight? Christians say, "Wow, isn't God good?" Or I've struggled with God's goodness in my own life. Within two years, my husband and I suffered major health complications. The hospital became a revolving door and I had to wonder how good God is in the midst of all this suffering. Others pointed out, "Thank god they found your brain infection in time, isn't god so good?" or "Thank god Chris' medical team was able to put him in a defibrillator. God is so good."

But I wondered why he allowed me to get sick in the first place, or why God couldn't heal Chris' heart before we got to this point. Perhaps the most difficult circumstance is the death of a loved one. We lost our father-in-law in the middle of the pandemic. Instead of being surrounded by family for a funeral, we were isolated and forced to wonder why he died as tragically as he did. Still others pointed out, "Wow, isn't God good to give you seventeen extra years with Him?" But is that WHY God is good? Because he held our hands in the midst of our suffering? I say yes. He revealed goodness and His hand of kindness in all situations, even in our sorrow.

God is good because God himself says he is good. The Bible doesn't just say that Godtutgood things. It says that God is good. It's not just what he does; it is who he is - and who he isoh nochanges. In a world of change and contradiction, He is constant, He does not change.

Jesus agreedLukas 18:19and1 Johannes 1:5the"No one is good except God alone"and“God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all.”What does that mean? According to Merriam Webster, the definition of "God" is "that being in perfect power, wisdom, and goodness, who is worshiped as the creator and ruler of the universe." To say that God is good means that God always acts in a way that is true, noble, right, and good. Kindness is part of His nature and He cannot contradict His nature. Righteousness and holiness are also part of His nature. He can do nothing that is unholy or unjust. Let's look at a few more important scriptures:

(Video) Neil deGrasse Tyson on God

“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is he who takes refuge in him"(Psalm 34:8).

“For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness endures through all generations"(Psalm 100:5).

“The Lord is good, a refuge in time of need. He cares for those who trust him"(Nahum 1:7).

"To theGod loved the world so muchthat he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life"(Johannes 3:16).

"For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither present nor future, nor powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation can separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus, our Lord"(Romans 8:38-39).

“But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in trespasses—that's itby grace you are saved(Epheser 2:4-5).

(Video) Gay Girl, Good God: The Story of Who I Was And Who God Has Always Been

“See how great a love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!”(1 Johannes 3:1).

"This is how God showed his love among us: he sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him" (1 Johannes 4:9).

“Love is patient, love is kind. It doesn't envy, it doesn't boast, it doesn't pride itself. It does not dishonor others, it is not selfish, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrong. Love does not delight in evil, but delights in truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always endures. love never fails"(1 Corinthians 13:4-8).

"Every good and perfect gift descends from above, from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows."(James 1:17).

These are just a few verses about the indwelling goodness of God. So the question that needs to be asked is: If God is good, then why is life hard? Jason Helveston says, "Life is hard because God is good." OtherswriterIt says: “In other words, God “designed the world in such a way that effort is required to bring about significant change, advancement, and renewal.” We should “never … pray away difficulties,” but “embrace them, know their purpose , looking to Jesus and praying to become more like Him through all of this.”

God is good because he is God. it isourhumanity painting Him differently becauseweare the ones who created sin and evil. When sin invaded God's perfect creation, He had a plan to redeem mankind. The gospel reveals this "good news" where God sent his Son to become the perfect and blameless sacrifice so that our sins could be forgiven. God does not want anyone to perish but all to come to have eternal life in Him.

(Video) God Turned It Around - Tim Godfrey feat. Nathaniel Bassey and Tim Bowman, Jr.

In His plan of salvation, He did not say that our lives would always be good. Instead, he warned us that we will face difficulties in this life. We will experience sickness, freak accidents, death, pain, hurt feelings, and disappointments; but he has promised that he has plans to prosper us and not harm us. He promised he would go with us and he promised to redeem us in this fallen world. Our walk with Him will take us over high mountains and through low valleys.

The Lord does not promise us a life of joy without suffering. However, he promised to help us with everything. In fact, he reminds us of it2 Corinthians 9:8that he wants to bless us abundantly so that we may have everything we need and abound in every good work. But what does that really mean?

John MacArthur wrote, "God's goodness is that he is the perfect sum, source, and measure (for himself and his creatures) of that which is wholesome (conducive to well-being), virtuous, useful, and beautiful." God never has stopped being good and he wants good things for us.2 Corinthians 9:8says,"And God can bless you abundantly so that when you have everything you need, you may abound in every good work in everything and at all times."

This passage tells us that God will reward us for giving to others as He has commanded. Paul says that God isable toinstead of GodWillebecause we have been commissioned to do his will and reflect his glory in all we do. At the same time, he tells us that we will have everything we need. We need not fear loss, death, sickness and disappointment because he is with us in these times and everything is working together for our good. He gives us good things, both spiritual and earthly.

God is not only with us in our joy, but he is also there in the midst of our pain and disappointment. Think about what you've been through lately. Got a promotion, a raise, a new car, a new home, a healthy baby in your arms? Did you finally get the job you've always wanted? Did you receive enough money to pay a bill, buy groceries, or come home to a warm home? Did you wake up today with breath in your lungs? Then yes, God is good. These are just theminfinitely small detailsIt works for each of us, even in the midst of a pandemic or other major crisis.

The Bible paints God's goodness as broad brushstrokes of love, even in dark times. And we've all seen dark times. Was God still good when he allowed Satan to burden Job with suffering? Was God still good when he did not answer Paul's prayer to remove Satan's torment through the thorn in the flesh? Was he good when he let his son die a horrible death on the cross? Personalize now. If you lose your job, lose your home, can't have a child, or the doctor says you have COVID or three months to live, is God still good? Yes, for His goodness is ingrained in all your trials and your joys. He loves you so much that He will grow you and sanctify you abundantly until eternity - then He will reward you for your faithfulness.
